Types of Training Exercises

Each of the lessons and exercises in this video course series will train you in a different aspect of speed reading. The lessons will gradually increase in speed and difficulty as you go through the courses. Remember to use the Warm Ups before beginning a practice session, especially if you plan on practicing for more than 15 to 20 minutes at one time. You can change the text used in these exercises at any time. See "Viewing and Selecting Texts" for more information.

Text Flash Exercises

In these exercises, you will be training your eyes to take in groups of words, instead of reading words one at a time. This is one of the exercises that will help you overcome a habit of subvocalization. Keep your eyes in the middle of the screen for these exercises.

Text Highlighter Exercises

These exercises stretch your eye muscles and train you to expand your field of vision. This will help you read words in larger groups, and also helps to prevent subvocalization. Move your eyes to follow the groups of highlighted words, but don't read the words one by one.

Horizontal Text Trainer Exercises

Like the Text Flash exercises, these exercises train your eyes and brain to read groups of words quickly. In this exercise, the text is displayed in sequence horizontally to mimic the natural progress of your eyes from left to right on a page or screen. Read the words in a group, not individually.

Text Scroller Exercises

This is another exercise that helps prevent both regression and subvocalization. The text is displayed in sequence vertically, which helps you get used to the natural rhythm of reading on-screen and printed documents. Remember to read the words as a group.

Field Expander Exercises

These exercises focus on helping you expand your field of vision in order to take in more words at one time. Keep your eyes in the middle of the screen and relax.

Pace Trainer Exercises

These exercises build up your eye strength and eye coordination. Follow the highlighted words on the left and right sides of the screen, but remember to keep your head still, and your eyes relaxed as you read.

Chunk Expander Exercises

In these exercises, you'll need to avoid regression and only concentrate on the next chunk of text that is uncovered. This type of exercise gives you a good idea of how speed reading works on e-readers and computer screens.

Eye Movement

This exercise combines the skills of quick focus and "chunking" (reading a group of words, instead of reading words one by one). You will need to keep your mind alert and your eyes relaxed to follow the word groups from side to side on the screen without moving your head.

Icon Tracker

This series of exercises helps you build eye muscle strength and flexibility. You will need to keep your head still and your eyes relaxed while you follow the icons as they move around the screen.

Eye Tracker

With these exercises, you will train your mind to recognize the images you see, as quickly as possible. This type of exercise strengthens the connection between your optic nerves and the image processing center of your brain, which will increase both reading speed and comprehension.
