Speed and Comprehension Goals

There are two important aspects of learning to speed read: reading speed and comprehension. When you first log on to the 7 Speed Reading system, you will need to set your initial learning goals. You can set these goals yourself, or have the system recommend a beginning target for each goal.

The average person generally has a reading speed of about 200 wpm (words per minute), and many users choose to set their beginning goal for reading speed at 600 wpm so that they can triple their reading speed by using the 7 Speed Reading system. Because comprehension is just as important as speed, we recommend that you keep your target comprehension rate goal at 80% or higher.

You can adjust your goal settings at any time. There are three ways to access the settings:

The first time you log in to 7 Speed Reading, the system will prompt you to set your goals. You can also change your goal settings at any time as you improve your speed and comprehension. By continuing to challenge yourself with new goals, you'll accomplish two things. First, the system will adjust to provide you with more advanced training. Second, you'll be motivated to keep improving your speed reading skills.

To set your goals, simply slide the selector bars until you have the target speed and comprehension rates you want to work towards right now, and then click the “Set” button.

If you're not sure what your target rates should be, click the "Recommend" button. You'll be prompted to select a text, and then to take a short reading speed test. The system will use the results of that test to recommend the reading and comprehension rates based on your current reading speed. The texts are sorted by reading level. To get the best recommendations, select a text that matches your current reading skill level.
