So you have a test coming up soon and you need to read that book, and fast! What can you possibly do for a quick fix? This article will share some tips and tricks on how to read faster.
Review the text that you are about to read. Read the beginning and end of each chapter, as that is what contains the most important information. Also, read the table of contents and indexes so that you can figure out which section you absolutely must read.
Using an object to point to the text enhances reading speed as it allows you to pace yourself and focus. Another helpful tip is to cover the lines immediately preceding and following the one you are reading with a paper or cue card.
Another way to quickly increase reading speed is by reading the first and last sentence of a paragraph while simply skimming through the rest. The first and last sentence are the ones that indicate what the paragraph is really about, and therefore require more focus, whereas the remaining sentences do not require as much focus since they are an explanation of the sentences that frame the paragraph.
It is very important that you become more interactive with the text. This means that you should hold a pen or highlighter while reading, and highlight, underline, or write quick notes in the margin whenever you find something that catches your interest or requires more attention. This may seem counter-productive, and you may think that this will cause you to take longer to read the text however, interacting with the text allows you to retain this information. When you retain the information, you do not need to re-read the text and thus, take longer to finish reading. The information is retained because you gave your brain a reason to further process this information, and therefore store it into memory and remember it. Also, discussing the text with someone, or explaining the text to someone will allow you to retain the text.
Take your time when reading something that requires more focus, otherwise you will just end up re-reading the text. If a particular section contains a complicated thought process, or big or new words, don’t skim over it. Always adjust your reading speed based on the text at hand. Naturally, certain paragraphs or pages will take us longer to read than others. It’s important to focus on the more difficult parts of the text so that you do not end up going back and re-reading.
However, skipping over connection words, or small words can actually help you read faster. There is no need to read words such as is, but, in, the, thus, therefore, etc. You will still understand the text if you skip these words and it will take you less time to read.
Of course, as with everything, training yourself to speed-read requires a lot of practice. The more you read, the quicker you will become. There are several speed-reading software on the market that will help you develop and practice these techniques among others.
