How to read faster and retain information

Categories: Speed Reading |

People are willing to pay for information as long as the information is valid.  If someone learns of a method that will increase their golf swing, save time cleaning their home, or improve relationships with their children then they will happily shell out the money for the knowledge.  It is possible to follow this same example when people want to learn how to read faster and retain information.

In order to improve at anything people must follow a logical series of steps.  The first step is to identify their current skill level.  The second step is to find a proper method for improving the skill.  Third, the person must put away any bad habits that impede their progress.  Fourth, and this is the most crucial step, they must practice consistently until the skill is mastered.

All of these steps can be followed when people wish to learn how to read faster and retain information.  The easiest step is determining how fast someone currently reads and how well they retain the information.  Using a stopwatch and reading a 1,000 word passage should do the trick nicely.  The person simply reads for one solid minute.  At the end of the minute count up the words and presto the person has their reading words per minute rate.

Next is finding a program that can literally teach a person how to read faster and retain information.  This program should be backed by a guarantee and offer plenty of happy reviews from past clients.  The program should also be designed and tested by scientists to ensure that is really works.

The third step takes effort on the part of the user.  Learning how to break bad habits takes time for everyone.  Some of the most common traits for people that want to increase their reading speed are subvocalizaiton and rereading. Subvocalization is the practice in which we pronounce or sound out a word in our head while we are reading.  This requires too much time for someone that wants to zip through a passage.  The eyes are darting across the page trying to get to the next word while the brain is applying proper pronunciation techniques.  Breaking this one habit alone can speed up reading tremendously.  The other bad habit, re-reading, is the practice of reading something multiple times.  Any time we do the same work twice we lose time.  Learning to completely avoid this will also increase reading speed.

The final step is where the rubber meets the road.  Practice is what separates the greats from the mediocre.  Regardless of the activity, the people that practice the most and utilize good techniques into their practice are the people that excel.  A person that truly wishes to learn how to how to read faster and retain information will put in the necessary time to practice and hone their skill.
