September is eventful one could say! Significant events and milestones were achieved that forever changed life as we know it. Let’s look at the 10 most important events that occurred in September.

#1

It was in the early hours of September 1, 1939 that World War II started. Hitler’s armies invaded Poland, marking the onset of one of the darkest moments in human history.

#2

On September 2, Napoleon the Third surrendered during the Battle of Sedan, essentially marking the fall of the 2nd French Empire. That took place in 1870.

#3

In 1993, Israel and the PLO ended years of negotiation by coming to an agreement of mutual recognition. The international community was hopeful this would accelerate the conflict resolution between the two countries. More than 10 years later the issue is still unresolved.

#4

September 11 is another dark day in the history of humanity as the biggest and worst terrorist attack on US ground takes place. About 3,000 were killed as an aftermath.

#5

In 1788, New York become the federal capital of the newly established American Government.

#6

Grace Kelly, Hollywood actress and Princess of Monaco, died in a horrid car accident in Monte Carlo. Her daughter, Stephanie, also in the car, survived with only bruises. Grace Kelly’s stunning film career ended prematurely, to the grief of millions of fans worldwide as well as her family. This took place on September 14, 1982.

#7

It’s been more than 100 years (September 16, 1908) since GM was founded by the entrepreneur William Crapo Durant in the state of Michigan.

#8

New Zealand allows women to vote. It’s the first country to do so and this takes place on September 19, 1893. The nation sets in motion a wave of new discourse that would gradually urge more countries to give women the right to vote.

#9

It’s September 26, 1960. The American people witness the first-ever presidential debate between candidates JFK and Richard Nixon.

#10

California is discovered by Portuguese navigator Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo on September 28, 1542 – when he drops anchor at the San Diego Bay.

How are you going to use these historical facts?

When the New York Times speaks, the world listens. And now, with news reports from the most-recent IPCC climate talks in Japan sending shivers down the spines of people everywhere, the newspaper-of-record goes out on a springtime limb and headlines an article by national reporter Richard Perez-Pena “College Classes Use Arts to Brace for Climate Change.”

Perez-Pena, who is based in New York, flew out to Eugene, Oregon to get the story. He met with University of Oregon professor Stephanie LeMenager — and the graduate students in her pioneering class — and filed a report that appeared in both the print edition of the paper and online.

LeMenager is teaching a class called “The Cultures of Climate Change.” It’s the first in the nation, even the world, to focus on the arts and climate change this way.

As the Times notes, the goal of the seminar ”is not to marshal evidence for climate change as a human-caused crisis, or to measure its effects — the reality and severity of it are taken as given — but how to think about it, prepare for it and respond to it.”

The Winter 2014 semester class going on now focuses on ”films, poetry, photography, essays and a heavy dose of the mushrooming subgenre of speculative fiction known as climate fiction, or ‘cli-fi’, novels like ‘Odds Against Tomorrow’ by Nathaniel Rich, and ‘Solar,’ by Ian McEwan.”

Rich’s cli fi novel recently appeared in paperback, after making a splash last year in April when NPR picked it for a series of specials on cli fi novels.

“Speculative fiction allows a kind of scenario-imagining, not only about the unfolding crisis but also about adaptations and survival strategies,” Professor LeMenager told the Times. “The time isn’t to reflect on the end of the world, but on how to meet it. We want to apply our humanities skills pragmatically to this problem.”

LeMenager’s students at UO this semester tend to share her activist inclinations, she says, and are enjoying the class, blogging about it and tweeting about it. With the Times article now online, the story has gone global and been translated into several languages already.

According to the Times, novels set against a backdrop of climate change are beginning to make their mark on the literary scene, books such as “The Windup Girl,” by Paolo Bacigalupi; “Finitude,” by Hamish MacDonald; and “The Carbon Diaries 2015,” by Saci Lloyd. Well-known writers have joined the trend, the Times observed, mentioning both Barbara Kingsolver, with “Flight Behavior,” and Ian McEwan.

LeMenager says her seminar is open only to UO graduate students, with some working on degrees in environmental studies, others in English and one in geography, and according to the Times report, “it can have the rarefied feel of a literature seminar…. fueled by readings from Susan Sontag and Jacques Derrida.”

Cli fi novels and movies ”fit into a long tradition of speculative fiction that pictures the future after assorted catastrophes,” the Times reports, adding: Novels like “On the Beach,” by Nevil Shute, and “A Canticle for Leibowitz,” by Walter M. Miller Jr., and films like “The Book of Eli,” offered a world after nuclear war, as well as Stephen King’s “The Stand,” Margaret Atwood’s “Oryx and Crake” and “The Year of the Flood,” and films like “12 Monkeys” and “I Am Legend” imagined the aftermath of biological tampering gone horribly wrong.”

Nathaniel Rich, who lives in New Orleans and often writes for the Times Sunday magazine and its oped pages, told the Times: “You can argue that that is a dominant theme of postwar fiction, trying to grapple with the fragility of our existence, where the world can end at any time. It surprises me that even more writers aren’t engaging with it.”

So where does cli fi come from? “The climate-change canon dates back at least as far as ‘The Drowned World’ written in 1962 by J. G. Ballard,” the Times reported. So this is nothing new. It’s just “mushrooming” now.

According to the Times, cli fi novels have ”characters whose concerns extend well beyond the climate, some of it is set in a present or near future when disaster still seems remote, and it can be deeply satirical in tone.”

Have you read a cli fi novel recently? Are you writing one?

When the mention of a rising literary genre makes it into the pages of the New York Times, you know something important is going on. This is one meme worth bookmarking and watching as it grows worldwide.

If you love what you’re doing at your job and are perfectly content with where you are, the salary you earn, and the people you work with, then you might not be interested in finding new and creative ways to work and earn money. On the other hand, you never know when you might change your mind – or find that something changes in your situation or career. Many people in the past have focused on self-improvement and career development to advance in their current profession, but others have made radical changes in their jobs and found new ways to make a living. One of these people is Jon Rhodes, who now makes his money through internet marketing, and through helping other people do the same.

7S: When people think about internet marketing, it’s often related to one of two things. First, they imagine themselves as a successful marketer, sitting back and watching the money roll in. Second, they check their spam messages and get a much less flattering picture of the profession! Which is it, really?

JR: I would have to say that the reality is neither. Once you start sitting back, that’s when you are on the slippery slope down. There is always work that can be done to improve your business. Its a nice idea having a business running on autopilot, but things change all the time, and you can’t take your eye off the ball. However you can work hours that suit you, and from a location that suits you. So it is perfectly possible to be running your business from a villa in Spain. But you must stay actively involved on a daily basis, or risk getting left behind.

There are many spammers, but these aren’t the successful affiliate marketers. You can’t make money online this way. Have you ever bought anything from a spammer? People aren’t daft when it comes to parting with their hard earned cash, and want to be sure you are trustworthy and ethical in what you do. I find it a bit frustrating that so many people spend so much time and energy spamming. If they put this same effort into dong things the ethical way, they would probably make a lot more cash.

7S: Why do you describe what you do as “ethical” internet marketing?

JR: To me affiliate marketing is about building up trust and reputation. This means doing things the ethical way. Being honest about the products you sell, and only selling what you have tried yourself and know is top quality.

My blog Affiliate Help teaches ethical affiliate marketing practices. This is better for long term success. Search engines are becoming more sophisticated all the time, so even if a spam technique works now, it won’t in the future. People are also becoming increasingly web savvy, and also increasingly see through any tricks you pull. Play the long game and do things the ethical way, and this helps assure your long term success.

7S: For our readers who aren’t familiar with the concept of affiliate marketing, could you please explain how it works?

JR: Sure. When you join an affiliate program (which is nearly always free), you are given a unique affiliate link. You can put this link on your website, on social media etc. When someone clicks on it, this is automatically tracked with cookies. It usually takes them to a sales page. If they buy a product, then you are automatically credited with a percentage commission. The occasional program will pay for some other action, such as a sign up.

So for instance I run my own hypnotherapy affiliate program. My affiliates put their unique links on their websites and on places such as Facebook and Twitter. When someone clicks on their link it takes them to my hypnosis website. If they make a purchase within 60 days, they receive 50% commission for the sale. This is a pretty good deal as they don’t have to create a product, don’t have to spend anything up front buying a product, and don’t have to deal with postage. Everything is done for them.

7S: How many websites do you read each day? Does your reading help you in your work?

JR: I do read a few websites, but I am trying to cut this down. I think most affiliate marketers will admit to spending too much time reading, and not enough time working. There are so many distractions online it is easy to fritter away a whole morning getting little done. I now try to allocate about half an hour first thing in the morning to get some reading done, then concentrate on work after that. It’s a constant battle trying to remain focussed on your work!

7S: What skills do people need to have before they consider going into internet marketing?

JR: The main things you need is tenacity and a willingness to learn. It is very likely that you will work hard for your first year without making much money. The majority of people give up well before then. You need the tenacity to keep going through this.

You also need to learn a whole load of skills. Sure you can outsource work, but you don’t want to be too far out of pocket in your early days. Learning copywriting (sales writing) and blog creation is pretty much essential. If you can set up a WordPress blog, there’s a lot you can do with pluggings and templates.

You have to keep going and keep learning new skills, build up contacts and build up reputation. Eventually you will get there, but it does take time and hard work.

Memory plays a role in our lives from beginning to end. Babies learn to recognize and remember faces and sounds; young children unconsciously memorize words and expressions from conversations around them. Students need a good memory to succeed in school, and every job requires a worker to remember tasks, procedures, and schedules. Having a good memory is part of speed reading training, because it ensures good comprehension and recall of the text you read, even as you increase your reading speed. Working to improve memory at any age is important, so that we don’t lose this crucial function just when we need it most. At Mark Beselt’s website, you can find information on what makes a good memory work, ways to help prevent memory loss, and explanations about some of the reasons people have memory problems.

7S: You provide clear and easy to understand information about memory, brain function, and health issues, as well as memory training techniques. What inspired you to set up this website?

MB: To answer the question in one word: stress…or, more accurately the impact stress had on my life. My second son was born with a very rare and very large arachnoid brain cyst (fluid filled sac not a solid mass or tumor). My wife and I spent most of the first six weeks in the local children’s hospital. When we were finally able to take him home after his brain surgery, he was on oxygen 24 hours a day and required tube feeding through his nose. The feeding actually took between 12 to 14 hours per day because we could not feed him too fast or he would vomit and we would have to start all over again.

Not only were we busy at home, but he was being followed by seven specialty clinics at the hospital, which meant visits at least two to three times per week for the first six months.

To say this time was stressful is an understatement. One of the things I noticed was how poor my memory became. I had always been a bit absent minded, but my memory became really bad. There were days when I couldn’t remember things that I knew or should know…like my own phone number or my postal code (ZIP code). My wife noticed that I was having the same conversation with her multiple times in the same day.

One of the concepts that came up in many of the discussions with my son’s neurologists and neurosurgeons was about brain plasticity. Essentially, the brain has the ability to adapt to being malformed. This concept really gave me hope that my son could be typical but it also got me thinking about the importance of brain training and brain and memory health in general. I would love to be able to build out my site at a faster pace in order to help more people, but with a young family, I do what I can, when I can.

For those who are interested…my son still has some challenges, but he has done far better than my wife and I and his doctors could have ever hoped or imagined.

7S: The memory problems people often experience with age can create difficulties in daily life. How soon should people start working on memory improvement to avoid these problems down the road?

MB: My personal view is that it is never too early to begin memory improvement training. If you learn how to keep your brain sharp early in life, all things being equal, it is easier to carry those gains in to your latter years. I have seen this effect in a close friend’s 95 year old grandmother. I have only known her for a few years, but her family tells me that she is as sharp as she was at 40 or 50. A big part of her secret has been keeping her brain active and challenged. She has done crossword and number puzzles daily and kept up on statistics for the Green Bay Packers football team for the past 40 years.

While I believe it is important to start early, I certainly do not want anyone to think they should give up if they are suffering some of the effects of age related memory loss. Research has shown that your brain is plastic or able to create new neuro-pathways at any age…it just needs to be stimulated and challenged on a regular basis.

7S: You say that it’s normal to have lapses of memory once in a while, but what can someone do if they think they’re having worse-than-normal memory problems?

MB: If you think you are having memory problems that are bad enough to affect your daily life, I would probably start with my family doctor. There are a number of conditions that can affect your memory which can be ruled out by simple tests. While your doctor is going to rule out the “long-shots”, he is likely going to focus on 4 basic life-style factors that affect memory. Those are sleep, diet, the amount of exercise you are getting and the amount of stress you are under. When my son’s health challenges were most acute, I failed at managing each of these factors. I did not sleep more than a couple of hours per night; I ate a horrible diet mostly potato chips and fast food; I did not exercise at all and I was under a horrendous amount of stress. As a consequence, my memory really suffered.

While my situation was an extreme example of the impact of health mismanagement over a relatively short period, people who fail to manage these lifestyle factors have often done so for years. The memory impact from prolonged mismanagement is often harder to see because it may be gradual. The good news is changing these lifestyle factors, will help your memory. Improvement may also be gradual, so persistence is necessary.

Whether you are dealing with the impact of lifestyle factors or a more serious health challenge, the fifth area you can work on is brain training. My research into brain plasticity indicates that by challenging your brain, you can see improvements in your memory and overall cognition as well as reflexes and muscle control.

7S: People are used to hearing the phrase “eat right and exercise” related to weight loss, not memory gain. Why is this good advice for memory improvement as well?

MB: I think people often forget (no pun intended) that our bodies function as a complex interdependent system. Eating more calories than we are burning will cause us to gain weight but the increase in insulin required to store excess calories as fat is hard on our brains. We also need to be sure we are eating foods that still have the nutrients intact. Most processed foods are devoid or low in nutrients and naturally occurring vitamins. Our bodies and brains need these nutrients and vitamins to function properly.

As you mentioned exercise is important because it releases a number of helpful hormones and neurotransmitters in addition to reducing the impact stress has on our brains. My research for my own life and my website has shown that we need to eat right and exercise but we also need to reduce our stress and get enough sleep.

7S: Can people get all the nutrition they need for a healthy brain through their daily diet?

MB: Yes, I think it is technically possible to get all the nutrition you need for a healthy brain from your diet but it is practically difficult…not impossible…just difficult. One of the main challenges is that people are very busy. The people who market food know this, so they sell food designed for convenience and shelf-life with nutrition being secondary. Our fruits and vegetables are not much better. Most of what we see in the grocery store are grown on factory farms and are sprayed with loads of synthetic pesticides, herbicides then packaged with fungicides. I even read that farmers are spraying growth hormones on crops to shorten growing seasons and increase crop yields.

The state of our food supply is part of the reason my wife and I made the decision to grow as much of our own food as we can and only buy organic fruits, vegetables, meats and dairy when possible. It takes work and costs a bit more but I have a good idea of what our kids are eating.

If you don’t have space for a garden and can’t afford organic, you can still get a lot of the vitamins and nutrients you need from high quality vitamins. I personally only take vitamins where the active ingredient is naturally occurring. You can get synthetic vitamins where they recreate the target vitamin in a lab, but there is research to suggest that they are not easily absorbed or as bioactive, so choose wisely.

There’s a tradition at the White House in Washington, D.C., of having an Easter Egg Roll every year. This year, President Obama added a new tradition, of reading to a group of young children who had come to the White House for the fun activities. He read the book “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom” to them – and with them – and talked about reading.

“Because reading is important. If you know how to read then the whole world opens up to you. So I want everybody to read hard, okay? Read as many books as you can. All right? So then someday you can be up here reading to other kids.”

Watch the whole video here, provided by www.whitehouse.gov

Reading is very important for children and adults. Many studies have been done on the link between reading and school success, and how that even impacts a person’s later career and income levels. When parents and guardians read to children, and then read books with them as the child learns to read on their own, they’re boosting vocabulary development, reading fluency, and an interest in learning and discovery. If you’re a parent, try to make time every day to encourage your child to read. The more they read, the better they’ll get at that skill, and soon they’ll be speed reading their way even through the hardest school books.

One great way to help all children learn to read is to volunteer to work with those who don’t have that family support. Many local libraries, youth centers, and social services organizations have programs that bring adult readers together with children who want to learn to read. If you have time, you might consider sharing your love of reading with those children – it will give them the reading strength they need to go on to succeed at school. Who knows, one day one of those children might become President themselves!

“How can we provide a good education for our children?” is a question asked by parents and politicians alike. Naturally, teachers have their opinions on the educational process, too – in fact, we’ll bet that you won’t find anyone who doesn’t have something to say about school quality or student achievement, whether that’s talking about their own experiences or what they think of “kids these days.” In the United States, the “No Child Left Behind” program was designed to raise the overall quality of education, by requiring schools to meet strict testing standards. In other words, if too many students tested in math and English skills failed to score highly enough, that school would be required to change its teaching practices, or replace its teachers, or even close down. A lot of argument has gone on over the last ten years about whether this approach has been working. Teachers complain that they’re required not to educate students, but instead to make sure they know how to pass the tests. That’s a superficial education, they say, and maybe not an education at all. Think about the difference between learning that 1492 was the year Columbus arrived in the Americas, and learning all about the political situation in Europe during this time of global trade and conquest as France, Spain, Portugal, The Netherlands, and England fought over territory around the world. If you only know the date, you might be able to answer a multiple-choice test question correctly, but you wouldn’t be able to write an answer to an essay question about why Columbus sailed for the New World.

In answer to some of these complaints, a new program called “Common Core Standards” has been developed and is being implemented across the United States. It’s designed to focus as much (or more) on the why of information as the what, according to its promoters. As part of the new system, reading skills will get a new focus. Teachers will work on getting students to read more deeply, to think about what they’re reading, and to be able to talk and write about the text. They’ll use both fiction and non-fiction in their classes, rather than fiction alone, to give students the opportunity to think about real-world situations and issues as well as literary devices, characterization, and plot. For some teachers, adjusting to the new standards has been difficult, because they have had to change lesson plans they’ve been using for years. Other teachers disagree with the use of third-party materials from businesses who are creating “ready-made” lesson plans and examinations, saying that these often fall back into the trap of “teaching to the test” with only one right answer possible, even in a case of opinion-based literary analysis.

Naturally, it will take a few years to see how this new system works, and whether it does have a positive impact on children’s reading skills. The theory is good – it’s always better to think about what you’re reading, rather than just skimming it and forgetting it – but it will take time to see how the Common Core program works in practice.

Does your child’s school use the Common Core program? Let us know what you think.

Learning to speed read involves training your eyes and your mind to process words quickly, which means not spelling them out letter by letter as you read. Because of this, you might wonder why we’re talking about typing skills today, and how those skills also help you become a faster reader. After all, you don’t type all the letters of a word at once, so how can faster typing lead to faster reading speeds? The answer is simple: you’re training your brain to work more quickly and to recognize words and patterns without consciously thinking about it. A good touch typist doesn’t sound out a word letter by letter, but instead allows their brain to control their fingers to create that word while their eyes are already moving on to the next words in the sentence. If you think about it, that’s exactly what a good speed reader does as well.

If you don’t know how to touch type, then you haven’t yet opened up that unconscious mental channel to connect your brain and your fingers. If you already touch type but don’t have the speed you want, then that channel’s not processing information as quickly as possible. In either case, you’ll be glad to know that there’s a powerful new software program available that will double or even triple your current typing speed – or your money back! Check out the features of eReflect’s newest product, Ultimate Typing, and find out how just 7 minutes a day can give you all the advantages of touch typing: improved job skills, faster communication, and a professional, polished look to all your correspondence.

Not only will the mental training you get as a touch typist help you read faster by improving your word-recognition skills, but you can also use Ultimate Typing to practice your speed reading by importing texts to use in the typing exercises. This allows you to practice reading a variety of materials, which improves your vocabulary along with your reading speed and typing speed. It’s a win-win situation for anyone who wants to speed up their ability to process all the information we have to handle daily in this high-speed and high-tech world, whether you’re taking it in by reading, or sending it out by writing. Your typing skills, like your speed reading skills, will help you keep pace with the demands of your job, and of your daily life. Find out more about Ultimate Typing today, and how 7 minutes a day can lead to success!

Have you heard that you might soon be able to trade your eyeglasses for a pair of iGlasses? A new iPhone app currently in development is promising to provide exercises that will help your brain learn to compensate for some of the effects of blurred images that occur when our eyes begin to develop presbyopia or other problems as we age. While this might sound too good to be true, early clinical trials are showing promising results, with people recording increased clarity and a faster reading speed after repeated training sessions.

Presbyopia is a common problem – so common, in fact, that it affects nearly everyone over the age of 40. As the eyes age, it becomes more difficult to focus on things that are close to the eyes, and harder to read finer print. You’ll notice this phenomenon at your biennial eye exams (you do schedule regular eye exams, don’t you?) as it becomes harder and harder to see the letters on the lowest, smallest line of the eye chart. You might also notice that you’ve started holding books and newspapers at arm’s length to help you read them, or that you’ve adjusted your computer monitor over time to be farther and farther away. Because these changes can be gradual, without regular eye exams it’s sometimes easy to overlook that you might need to wear glasses to help you read.

Many people skip the eye exams and go straight to the corner store for a pair of inexpensive reading glasses. These glasses come in various strengths, and while it’s true that some people may be able to use them successfully, for most people they won’t work as well. The strength of the lenses might not match exactly what you need; in addition, most peoples’ eyes focus at different lengths on each side, so they need a pair of glasses where each lens is adjusted to fit the specific eye.

By getting regular eye exams, you’ll be able to keep your eyes in optimum health and this will result in better reading speed for three reasons: you’ll be able to focus more quickly, you’ll be able to read smaller print without slowing down, and your eyes won’t get fatigued as easily.

If you haven’t had an eye exam in over three years, we encourage you to schedule one today.
